Application d’un protocole de suivi habitat « récifs » au large de la côte basque. Application méthodologique Index-Cor ArchiMer
De Casamajor, Marie-noelle; Lissardy, Muriel.
The purpose of this report is to test a sampling protocol to define a conservation status index for reef habitat in circalittoral environments to characterize benthic populations from surveys at 4 sites located in the Natura 2000 area “côte Basque rocky and extension offshore”. Due to the complexity of this habitat and the gaps in knowledge, an analysis of the protocol and its modalities is necessary. In parallel, optimization proposals are necessary for the relevance of the information provided and for apprehending a possible conservation status.

Définition d'Indicateurs de performance et d'un Tableau de bord pour la Réserve Naturelle Marine de La Réunion (Rapport du site atelier de La Réunion pour le projet PAMPA) ArchiMer
Tessier, Emmanuel; Pothin, Karine; Chabanet, Pascale; Fleury, Pierre-gildas; Bissery, Claire; David, Gilbert; Thomassin, Aurélie; Lemoigne, Valerie; Loiseau, Nicolas.
The objectives of marine protected areas (MPA), such as Reunion’s Marine Reserve founded in 2007, are (i) protect habitats (ecosystems) and resources (biodiversity) from increasing pressure due to a major urban, economic and recreational development; ii) manage uses and conflicts between traditional fisheries, spear-fishing, diving and recreational activities inside the coastal zone. These goals necessitate monitoring tools such as indicators and diagnostics. The PAMPA programme involves seven MPA including the Natural Marine Reserve of La Reunion (RNMR). It aims for each site to identify and validate indicators according to management objectives and group them in a MPA performance dashboard. This panel will help to visualize temporal trends and define...

Etat de santé initial des habitats et peuplements de poissons des récifs de Chesterfield-Bellona, Parc Naturel de la Mer de Corail, Campagne de stations vidéo rotatives STAVIRO 2013 ArchiMer
Pelletier, Dominique; Bockel, Thomas; Roman, William; Carpentier, Liliane; Laugier, Thierry.
- The AMBIO project conducted a comprehensive video-based baseline assessment of coral reef fish communities and associated habitats in the New Caledonian lagoons. The surveys rely on remote unbaited underwater video observations, using the STAVIRO rotating technique. Chesterfield and Bellona remote reefs and atolls are located in the Coral Sea Marine Park, northwest of New Caledonia. -This 2013 survey is the first scientific survey covering the entire area, with a sampling design stratified according to reef type. 203 stations were validated within 10 days. They were analyzed to characterize the habitat surrounding each station, and fish communities, based on a list of 565 fish species (cf. AMBIO/A/1). - 34 indicators were computed and mapped (maps...

Evaluation de l’état de santé des habitats et peuplements de poissons de la zone de Voh-Koné-Pouembout, Campagnes de stations vidéo rotatives STAVIRO 2007-2013 ArchiMer
Giraud-carrier, Charlotte; Pelletier, Dominique.
• Conducted within the AMBIO project, this work deals with coral reef fish communities and associated habitats, in the New Caledonian lagoons. It aims at assessing the status and trends of habitats and mobile macrofauna in the Voh-Kone-Pouembout lagoon, in the light of demographic and industrial developments and accounting for the existing customary reserve of Oundjo. • It relies on 280 stations collected in 2007 and 2013 using the remote unbaited underwater video STAVIRO rotating technique, which were analysed to characterize habitat, fish assemblages, turtles and sea snakes, from a list of 490 species (AMBIO/A/1). • 143 species (including one turtle species and one sea snake species), belonging to 23 families were observed. The most frequent and abundant...

Habitats of ten demersal species in the Gulf of Lions and potential implications for spatial management ArchiMer
Morfin, Marie; Bez, Nicolas; Fromentin, Jean-marc.
An improved knowledge of habitat utilization by demersal species is a pre-requisite for their spatial management. Based on scientific survey data collected over the period 1994-2010, the present study investigates relationships between 4 environmental factors and 10 demersal species in the Gulf of Lions (northwestern Mediterranean Sea). Generalized linear models provided statistically satisfying results in terms of both model explanatory and predictive powers. The 'biological zone' factors, based on the percentage of light penetration to the sea bottom and bottom temperature, were the most important factors, while sediments and benthic macrofauna were only significant for a few species. The type of associations varied among species, resulting in different...

Mesophotic ecosystems at Fernando de Noronha Archipelago, Brazil (South-western Atlantic), reveal unique ichthyofauna and need for conservation Neotropical Ichthyology
Pimentel,Caio R.; Rocha,Luiz A.; Shepherd,Bart; Phelps,Tyler A. Y.; Joyeux,Jean-Christophe; Martins,Agnaldo S.; Stein,Carlos Eduardo; Teixeira,João B.; Gasparini,João Luiz; Reis-Filho,José Amorim; Garla,Ricardo C.; Francini-Filho,Ronaldo B.; Delfino,Stephanie D. T.; Mello,Thayná J.; Giarrizzo,Tommaso; Pinheiro,Hudson T..
Abstract Although several studies on the ichthyofauna of the Fernando de Noronha Archipelago have been carried out, its mesophotic fish diversity has never been surveyed before. Here we used SCUBA and technical rebreather diving, baited remote underwater videos and remotely operated vehicle to record shallow (≤ 30 m depth) and mesophotic (31 to 150 m depth) fishes. Nineteen fish species belonging to 14 families are reported here as new records, representing an increase of 8.2% in marine fish richness for the region, which now has a total of 250 species and 77 families. These new records include four potential new species and highlight the importance of surveying mesophotic ecosystems, even in well studied sites. Our results also emphasize the need for...

Plastic debris occurrence, convergence areas and fin whales feeding ground in the Mediterranean Marine Protected Area Pelagos Sanctuary: a modelling approach ArchiMer
Fossi, Maria Cristina; Romeo, Teresa; Panti, Matteo; Marsili, Letizia; Campani, Tommaso; Canese, Simonepietro; Galgani, Francois; Druon, Jean-noël; Airoldi, Sabina; Taddei, Stefano; Fattorini, Maria; Brandini, Carlo; Lapucci, Chiara.
The Mediterranean Sea is greatly affected by marine litter. In this area, research on the impact of plastic debris (including microplastics) on biota, particularly large filter-feeding species such as the fin whale (Balaenoptera physalus), is still in its infancy. We investigated the possible overlap between microplastic, mesoplastic and macrolitter accumulation areas and the fin whale feeding grounds in in a pelagic Specially Protected Area of Mediterranean Importance (SPAMI): the Pelagos Sanctuary. Models of ocean circulation and fin whale potential habitat were merged to compare marine litter accumulation with the presence of whales. Additionally, field data on microplastics, mesoplastics and macrolitter abundance and cetacean presence were...
